Over the past 10 years, I have worked as an artist, a curator and a designer and have
maintained a working studio that bridges the gap between fine art and commercial design practices.
After selling directly from my studio, and through a number of galleries and fairs over the years,
I grew increasingly interested in the intersection between art and retail and decided to launch this site.
My photographs are archival pigment prints presented in hand finished frames. The images are created
from small sets I construct in the studio and are inspired by a broad range of influences from antiques,
Eastern tapestries, the decorative arts, and Indian miniature paintings, to modern design, popular culture,
children’s books, nature and artificiality alike.
I will mention that the titles, like the work, are intended to be fantastical and allow the viewer to deem
what is real and what is not.
Thanks for visiting and welcome!
John Murphy’s photographs have received a number of awards, including a grant from the
Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. His work is included in public collections and in private
collections throughout the United States and abroad.
